15 Effective Steps To Make BBQ Chicken In The Oven: Best DIY Recipe

Making BBQ chicken in the oven is highly recommended when you can’t make an outdoor BBQ party or you need a shortcut delicious menu to enjoy with family or friends.

From my long research and professional experience in this work, I am going to present you with 15 easy-going steps so that you make BBQ chicken in the oven like a pro.  So, let’s get started.

Step 1: Cut The Chicken Pieces

As you are planning to have a BBQ chicken party, chicken is the main ingredient. Consider a little over 2 and a half pounds of chicken leg pieces because this recipe is perfect for between 2.5 pounds to 3 pounds of chicken.

It is not always mandatory to have chicken leg pieces for BBQ, but it could be the best choice for you. Keep the chicken leg pieces in a bowl. It is wise to select a medium-size perforated bowl so that the water can drain out through the perforation.

Step 2: Loping Fat From The Chicken Pieces

Since outlying fat causes extra smoke and burning, trimming outer fats from the chicken is recommended as possible for avoiding excess smoke and inflammation. Excessive smoke can ruin the natural taste of barbecue chicken, and even ruin the shine on its surface.

So it is very important to trim the excess fat on the chicken pieces as much as possible to give the chicken pieces an attractive shape and to protect them from stains and burns.

Step 3: Oiling The Chicken

Coat all over the body of the chicken with a fine layer of oil so that the chicken pieces don’t get burnt, or lose their sparkling look. In addition to this, the oil coating on the chicken pieces will help the spices to stick well on the chicken body.

If necessary, you can notch vertically on the skin of the chicken pieces on both sides. As a result, the spice will stick well to the notched scratches on the skin of the chicken, which will make your barbecue chicken more palatable. And you can enjoy their taste in every bite.

Step 4: Making A Mixture Of Different Spices

In this stage, you need to get the required ingredients to make a solid mixture of spices so that you can scatter the mixture all over the chicken pieces. Let’s take a look at the list:

  • 2.5 to 3 pounds of chicken legs,
  • 1 tablespoon of packed garlic powder,
  • 1 tablespoon of packed onion powder,
  • 1 tablespoon of smoked paprika,
  • 1 tablespoon of salt-free lemon paper,
  • 1 tablespoon packed salt.

Now, take a perfectly shaped bowl, and combine all of the dry spices into the bowl. Make sure you combine each of the ingredients according to the measurements listed above so that you can make a solid mixture of spices.

For safety and hygiene, it is wise to use plastic gloves so that your hand can get from swelling or itching.

Step 5: Reserving Spices For BBQ Sauce

From the mixture of spices, keep between 1 to 1.5 tablespoons of rub for BBQ sauce which is applied on the chicken pieces to make BBQ sauce chicken. The sauce makes the BBQ chicken more yummy and delicious, and you will enjoy its taste on each bite.

Step 6: Seasoning The Chicken

Once your rub is ready, you need to take a big bowl so that you can pour the mixture on the chicken body. Now mix the rub well by hand on each piece of chicken, and make sure no piece of chicken is left out of the spice mixture.

It is worth mentioning that if you don’t have a collection of any of these ingredients to make your own rub for this, you can use your favorite BBQ rub or Chicken rub or even a brisket rub that normally works with flavoring BBQ to meat. If you want to use your preferred rub, you can use around 2 tablespoons of rub while seasoning your meat.

Step 7: Ranging The Chicken Pieces On The Baking Tray

Once seasoning is done, arrange the pieces of the chicken on the baking sheet of the oven. While ranging, it is necessary to make sure that the chicken pieces are not stuck to one another.

If you arrange them over-crowded, the meat can be peeled off after cooking. In addition to that, stuffing can increase the cooking time too. So, It is important to be careful while ranging them and try to keep the minimum distance between the pieces possible.

Step 8: Preparing The Oven

Setting the oven suitable for BBQ chicken is an important step. Make sure the oven rack is perfectly placed, and you have cleaned the oven along with the boiler pan. It’s important to ensure the oven floor, pan and rack are free from scattered fat, stuck food bits, and pieces of char so that they can’t make extra smoke.

It is recommended for you to place the oven’s rack at the top position, for instance, 4 to 6 inches down the broiler so that the pan gets more heat. If your chicken steak is higher than 1-inch thick, the best suggestion for you is to set the oven rack in the 2nd-highest position.

Step 9: Heating The Boiler

You can cook any food applicable for cooking under the oven’s broiler. Unlike normal oven settings, BBQ chicken needs more effulgent heat than the other foods cooked in the oven’s broiler. For grilled chicken, you need bottom heat, while BBQ chicken needs top heat.

Once your chicken pieces are perfectly seasoned and ready to bake in the oven, switch on the oven’s power cable, and inflame the boiler for about 10 minutes before cooking.

Step 10: Setting The Oven’s Temperature

Temperature and baking time in an oven may vary depending on the thickness and quality of the chicken. If you are working with super cold chicken, or maybe the chicken is not completely thawed, this would surely change the cooking time.

Whether you cook chicken leg pieces or whole chicken, the internal temperature of the oven broiler should reach at least 165 degrees Fahrenheit if you want to make your food safe to eat.

The best recommendation for you is to cook the chicken in a preheated oven at 375 degrees Fahrenheit for somewhere between 40 to 50 minutes.

Notably, as I mentioned earlier, your cook time may vary depending on how big and thick your chicken legs or pieces are. Be sure to thaw chicken completely to ensure even cooking. So, adjust the cooking time accordingly until your chicken pieces are completely thawed and ready to safely eat.

Step 11: Putting The Baking Tray Into The Oven

After you have successfully set the oven’s temperature according to your chicken thickness and types, keep the seasoned chicken pieces under the set rack of the boiler, and let them completely be roasted for somewhere between 40 to 50 minutes.

Step 12: Preparing BBQ Sauce

Meantime, until your chicken is completely roasted, let’s know how to prepare BBQ chicken sauce. The sauce is the main ingredient for presenting oven-baked BBQ chicken. You need the following ingredients for preparing the juicy and glittering chicken BBQ sauce:

  • ½ cup of water,
  • ½ cup of ketchup,
  • 1 cup of brown sugar,
  • ¼ cup of fresh apple cider vinegar,
  • 1 tablespoon of Worcestershire sauce,
  •  1 tablespoon of fresh molasses or honey,
  • ¼ tablespoon of ground mustard,
  • 1 to 1 ½ tablespoon of reserved dry rub.

Now, take a nonstick pan and set it on the stove. Pour the ingredients listed above on the pan, and combine them at low heat. After simmering gently for a minute, turn off your stove. Once you have satisfactorily found your expected taste and flavor,  pour them into a medium-size bowl, and set it aside for cooling down.

Step 13: Bringing Out The Oven’s Fan

When it’s been nearly 40 to 50 minutes, now pull out the oven’s pan, and check if the chicken is perfectly roasted. It, however, might take nearly an hour to thaw the chicken safe to eat, which depends on the size and type of chicken. Finally, if your barbecue chicken is cooked, bring out the tray.

Step 14: Applying BBQ chicken Sauce

At this point, your BBQ chicken leg pieces are ready to serve. But, If you want them to be a BBQ sauce chicken leg, go right ahead, and start applying it with BBQ chicken sauce all over the chicken legs. You can do it lightly, or you can layer it on thick. You can also apply extra BBQ sauce on it if you want to make your BBQ sauce chicken more delicious and yummy.

Step 15: Boiling The BBQ Sauce Chicken

Once you have applied all of your chicken legs with this BBQ chicken sauce, put the pan again into the oven’s broiler for 5 to 10 minutes. Actually with a high setting, no more than 5 minutes. Or, Keep the BBQ sauce chicken inside the oven’s broiler until the sauce is bubbly and a little charred.

Now, you have perfectly cooked the palatable and tasty BBQ sauce chicken, and they are ready to serve.
